New paper: identifying condensation flow regimes by sound
Published:
Our paper Slug Flow Condensation Identification with Acoustic Signatures is now published in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer.
Two-phase flows move a lot of heat, but they can change regime abruptly. In real equipment, the pipes and chambers are rarely transparent, so high-speed imaging isn’t available for monitoring. This paper shows that the acoustic signature of condensing flow carries enough information to identify slug flow. It points toward cheap, non-intrusive sensors that can report what is happening inside closed hardware in real time.
This builds on our earlier work on acoustic signatures of boiling critical heat flux (APS-DFD 2023) and flow condensation (Gordon Research Conference 2025). Read more on the acoustic diagnostics research page.
