ASTFE 2025: two talks and a first-place CFD competition win

UCLID had a strong showing at the 10th Thermal and Fluids Engineering Conference (ASTFE).
First place in the Green Energy CFD Competition. Amirhosein Sarchami led a team that won 1st place in the inaugural ASTFE Green Energy CFD Competition. Simulation is at the center of how our group works, and this was a good test of our students’ ability to apply it to an open-ended, real-world energy problem under competition conditions.
Two technical talks:
- Amirhosein presented “Leveraging Temperature-dependent Wettability to Control Flow in Porous Media”, our work on using thermally responsive surfactants to switch capillary flow regimes (more on porous transport).
- Ayaaz Yasin presented “Exploring Two-Dimensional Flows in Evaporating Thin Films: A Step Towards a Dynamic Model”, which extends our steady thin-film models to capture 2D flow near the contact line (more on thin films).
