Dr. Unmeelan Chakrabarti!

Congratulations to Unmeelan Chakrabarti on successfully defending his PhD dissertation, “A multiscale investigation of simplifying assumptions made during liquid-vapor phase change modeling.”
Unmeelan joined UCLID in 2022 after four years as an aeronautical engineer at India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation. His dissertation took two assumptions that almost every phase change model relies on, an isothermal interface and equal evaporation and condensation coefficients, and tested them against NASA’s Constrained Vapor Bubble experiments from the International Space Station, using models from molecular dynamics up to the continuum.
Along the way he:
- published two journal papers on the ISS analysis (2023, 2025), including our “three academic generations” paper co-authored with my own PhD advisor;
- won an Outstanding Student Presentation Award at ASME IMECE 2024;
- presented at APS-DFD, ASGSR, and NASA’s TFAWS;
- received the Prof. Kirti “Karman” Ghia Endowed Graduate Student Scholarship.
